Media for Democracy

What?

Media for Democracy is the annual event organized by Stichting Democratie en Media. Over the course of a day, more than 100 participants from the media sector discuss their role in our democracy. Together, they play a major role in shaping the Dutch media landscape.

Think of: editors-in-chief, publishers, executives, regulators, researchers, senior government officials, and journalists. This is truly unique: there is no other place where representatives of both public and private media come together.

Why?

The phase of warning and doom-mongering is behind us. It is time for the sector to look ahead together. How do we continue to provide society with truthful, pluralistic information while global tech giants and AI are drastically changing the playing field? What do we need to guard against, and what opportunities can we not afford to miss? What does a promising future for media look like, and what role do we play in it? We can only tackle the challenges we face by working together.

How?

Media for Democracy creates the space – one day, away from daily work pressures and mutual competition – to explore with colleagues from across the sector at what is truly at stake. The programme features contributions by innovative thinkers and round-table discussions, in which specific challenges for media and democracy are explored in depth in smaller groups. We are not looking for ready-made solutions, but rather sharp analysis, honest conversation and new insights.

Stichting Democratie en Media firmly believes that the future is not something that simply happens to us, but something we build together. SDM views building toward that future, in the service of our democracy, as its enduring mission.
