SDM is an independent foundation committed to free media and a strong democracy under the rule of law. We grew out of the foundation behind Het Parool, the resistance newspaper set up during the Second World War. Our core values are courage, engagement, and independence. SDM receives no subsidies and no dividends. Our work is funded by the returns on our own assets, built up over more than eighty years. We exclude sectors such as arms and tobacco from our investments. You can read more about our funding on this page.

SDM is a minority shareholder in DPG Media B.V., the largest publisher of journalism in the Netherlands. We safeguard editorial independence and internal diversity. Our priority share allows us to block the sale or closure of national titles—such as de Volkskrant, Trouw, AD, and NU.nl . We are a non-profit shareholder and do not receive dividends.
