European Press Prize

Journalism is one of the cornerstones of a civilization. Courageous journalists keep freedom alive, and good journalism is essential in a democracy. That is why, in 2012, the Democracy and Media Foundation, together with six other organizations—including The Guardian Foundation, the Jyllands-Posten Foundation, and the Veronica Association—established the European Press Prize. The prize aims to celebrate and encourage the best journalism on the continent.

The jury consists of editors from five different countries and awards prizes in five categories, ranging from investigative journalism to opinion and innovation.

With this journalism award, the Democracy and Media Foundation also hopes to encourage European journalistic collaboration. There is a great deal of high-quality investigative journalism in Europe, but relatively little collaboration. That is unfortunate, because many topics are transnational in nature. With this award, the foundation therefore aims to foster both collaboration and a strong network.
