Claim: Because of the vast amount of information, we are less well-informed than we used to be

News is available everywhere these days. But there’s so much of it that sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees. That’s why the sixth proposition of The Great Media Debate is: “Because of the sheer volume of information, we’re less well-informed than we used to be.” What do you think about this? Join the conversation on NUjij, NU.nl’s interactive platform.

You open the newspaper and put it away again. The news is usually over after twenty minutes. But online, you can scroll endlessly. The information never runs out. That way, you can take in an endless amount of news and other information—so much so that you might no longer know when you actually have enough information, or when you have too much.

The news that the social media platform Hyves is back sparked many nostalgic reactions among NU.nl readers. Users are looking forward not only to the dancing banana, but also to an online environment free of algorithms. Moreover, Hyves doesn’t have an “endless scroll,” which should make it easier to keep track of everything.

What do you think about being able to access so much information online? Do you feel like you have a good grasp of things and know what’s going on? Or do you actually have no idea anymore and feel overwhelmed? Vote on the statement and join the discussion below the article.

About The Great Media Debate

The Great Media Debate is a study, a conversation, and a campaign all in one. It’s about how we experience the news in the Netherlands, what we’re missing, what concerns us, and what could be improved. We believe these aren’t questions for media experts alone. That’s why we’re engaging in a conversation with a broad audience.Over the next six weeks, a new proposition or theme will be posted online each week. The Great Media Debate is an initiative of the Democracy and Media Foundation, in collaboration with De Argumentenfabriek and NU.nl.
