Join the conversation! The Great Media Debate kicks off today on NU.nl
“How does the algorithm affect you? Does it influence you, and what do you think about that?” That’s the first topic of The Great Media Debate, which the whole of the Netherlands can discuss today on NUjij. Over the next seven weeks, a new proposition or topic will be posted online each week.
The Great Media Debate is a study, a discussion, and a campaign all in one. It’s about how we experience the news in the Netherlands, what we’re missing, what concerns us, and what could be improved.
More news than ever
Because news is available everywhere, all the time. But who decides what you see? Who checks to make sure it’s accurate? What if you’re overwhelmed by it? And what happens when you and your neighbor are talking about the same topic, but it still seems like you’re talking about two different worlds?
“How do we stay in control of the news?” write NU.nl’s editors-in-chief, Lindsay Mossink and Thomas Moerman, in their editorial today. “The internet is changing at breakneck speed. On social media, you no longer choose what you see; the big tech platforms do everything they can to keep you trapped in their own one-sided bubble (often filled with sensationalism and controversy), and news continues to fade further into the background.”
They have a lot of questions for their readers: How do you actually navigate the online world? Do you scroll endlessly on Instagram or TikTok? And how do news stories reach you? Do you happen to come across them, or do you go looking for them? Do you try to maintain control over what you see? And do you even believe what you do see anymore? How do you check if it’s true? Do news organizations still play an important role for you? Or do you just use an AI chatbot to stay informed these days?
A conversation with everyone
We’re being bombarded with more information than ever, but we’re becoming less and less able to handle it. The Netherlands still has many news outlets: from *de Volkskrant* to *De Telegraaf* and from *NU.nl* to *NOS op 3*. But the revenue models for independent journalism are crumbling. Major tech platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok, are increasingly determining what we see. For young people, social media is the primary source of news. And the advent of AI—our personal news reader—will also change how information reaches us.
These aren’t just questions for media experts. They’re about how we live together, what information we pay attention to, and the future of our democracy. That’s why we’re having this conversation with experts, media professionals, and the general public.
Reliable information is indispensable for our democracy. There are many threats, but there are also many possibilities. Big Tech seems all-powerful, but what do we want ourselves? We must think about that together, while we still can. In the interest of our democracy.
