The Firewall
A handful of global tech companies are increasingly determining what information reaches us. Their business models shape what we see and what we believe—and, consequently, what we worry about. This has consequences for our news coverage and for the mental health of young people, for example. Europe has good regulations, but enforcement is slow and the fines are too small compared to Big Tech’s revenue. As a result, our society is losing its grip on a diverse information ecosystem focused on truth-seeking.
The Firewall is an investigative platform that examines the power, influence, and impact of Big Tech, and, where possible, takes legal action against abuses. The editorial team investigates how these tech companies operate and publishes its findings. In addition, an independent legal department may decide to take legal action. The combination of journalism and legal action is unusual and requires a clear separation of roles. The editorial team and the legal team therefore make decisions independently of one another, as set forth in an editorial charter. The Firewall is funded by members, donors, and grants.
The Democracy and Media Foundation is committed to an independent and pluralistic media landscape that serves the democratic rule of law. That landscape is largely controlled by Big Tech. The Firewall examines this dominant position while simultaneously enriching the media landscape. That is why we are a partner in this initiative.
