Theater After the Dam

Across the country, there are well over a hundred different performances taking place on and around May 4; they deal with the occupation, persecution, betrayal, resistance, and coming to terms with the past. These range from a grand production at Carré to small-scale performances created and performed by young people across the country. In these performances, young people engage in conversation with older residents of their city about their memories of World War II. These stories give rise to performances staged on location or in the streets. In this way, the young people become the bearers of these stories. They pass them on to those around them and carry them into the future. Because these projects have had such a profound impact on both participants and audiences, they have also been taking place in several European capitals on January 27—International Holocaust Remembrance Day—since 2017, under the guidance of Theater Na de Dam.
